Surroundings

Szakácsi is situated in the middle of the Cserehát, a beautiful region in the Northeast of Hungary, picturing a rolling landscape with alternating forests, farmland, small villages and wandering shepherds with herds of sheep or cattle. Special birds and butterflies can be discovered here and game of course. You regularly come across deer, pheasants, wild boar, badgers and foxes on the road.

It is not far from Miskolc, the province capital, former center of the mine and metal industry, of which you can still find reminiscences in musea and abandoned buildings. In Rudabánya you can visit the mine museum for example.
But Miskolc has it’s own touristic attractions, the Cave Bath is a traditional outing.

Edelény, the regional center has a rich and ancient history and you can experience glimpses of it visting the restored L’Huillier-Coburg Castle or the Táj Ház near the Földvár.
It’s also the place for getting your groceries as there are several supermarkets next to all kind of small shops.

Nature

The landscape around Szakácsi can be compared to that of the Dordogne or Tuscany: a varied landscape, hilly with agriculture and forests. Szakácsi itself has a rather unique micro-climate due to the presence of small-scale agriculture, two herds of sheep and the forests with acacias and oaks. You will also find here in addition to the deer, foxes, badgers and wild boar a particularly large variety of birds, birds of prey and butterflies. The hoopoe comes along at the swimming pool, every morning the golden oriole sings its song, the little owl looks through the small kitchen window, a couple of pheasants live in the back garden, the bee-eaters live in the remains of the excavated quarry, in the distance you hear the cuckoo and above in the sky the dwarf eagles fly.

But Szakácsi is also not far from two important national parks: the Aggtelek and the Bükk

Aggtelek Nemzeti (national) Park

The Aggtelek is a mountain range from the Karst period, with many limestone formations. It forms the northern reef of the Carpathian basin.

This national park owes its greatest fame to the caves (Unesco heritage). You can make an underground day trip from village to village on request. But there are also shorter excursions to visit the dripstone formations. Popular among our guests is a visit by carriage to the Hucul horses and then a tour of one of the caves.

The Aggtelek is the most famous butterfly region in central Europe. It hosts large populations of various endangered butterfly species, such as the Boszandoog and the Great Kingfisher butterfly.
The village of Jósfavő is famous for its large drinking groups of sometimes as many as 1,000 butterflies. Along the brook in the middle of the village sometimes large numbers of Queen pages, King pages, Lucerne butterflies, Mother-of-pearl butterflies and Blues gather.

In the grasslands in the Aggtelek Park where a herd of Hucul horses grazes, the traditional horse of the Carpathians, you will also find the most beautiful wild orchids.
The logo of the Aggtelek park is the rare fire salamander. After a rain shower you can see them near the cave entrance at Jósfavő.

Bükk Nemzeti Park

The Bükk is a low mountain range with peaks higher than 900 meters. It is the most varied mountain range in Hungary. Every winter there is snow here and there is a small-scale ski slope. There are alpine meadows, old forests, river valleys and dry grasslands and hidden valleys where no one comes. The central part with the karst plateau and the cliffs is very flowery and is teeming with insects. You will find various species of iris, such as Iris Siberica, and probably the Black Apollo butterfly here has the largest population in Europe in the Bükk Mountains.
There are large unspoilt areas where Black storks, the Imperial eagle, Scratching eagle, Short-toed eagle and Ural owl lurk. Woodpeckers, Hawfinches and Withals flycatchers are easy to spot. At the foothills of the mountains you will find the Southern Birthwort butterfly.

In Lillafured you can still see caves and a beautiful waterfall.

A visit to the Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park or the Tisza Lake can also be done from Szakácsi.
The Zemplén is also worth a day trip.
